Trump to Unveil $200 Billion in South Korea Investments, Including Alaska LNG Project
President Donald Trump is set to announce plans for South Korea to invest $200 billion in US projects, including a major energy infrastructure investment in Alaska's liquefied natural gas project.
The White House revealed that the announcement will detail the first major projects under a broader $350 billion strategic investment package made by South Korea as part of a trade agreement with Washington last year.
The package includes $150 billion for shipbuilding and $200 billion for strategic investments. The Alaska LNG project is expected to be one of the largest, with an 807-mile pipeline carrying natural gas from the North Slope to a liquefaction facility on Alaska's southern coast.
Japan's two biggest LNG importers have already signed preliminary agreements to buy a combined 2 million metric tons per year from Alaska LNG if it is built. However, the project has faced years of uncertainty over its cost, financing, and commercial viability, with some South Korean lawmakers raising concerns about its fiscal risks.
