Trump Touts False Economy Claims Amid Rising Fuel Prices
US President Donald Trump has made a claim about the US economy that experts are calling 'delusional'. Speaking to reporters, Trump said that with the exception of oil prices, which he claimed are lower than under the Biden administration, everything else is going down in price. However, this assertion is at odds with reality.
The cost of goods such as fuel and groceries has risen significantly due to the ongoing Iran war, which Trump started in February. The price of diesel reached a record high in September, and Americans are feeling the impact on their wallets every time they fill up. In fact, grocery inflation is 'primed to rise' according to an article by Grocery Dive, as elevated fuel prices mean retailers and suppliers will increasingly have to pass the additional cost onto consumers.
Trump's claim about oil prices being lower under his administration than under Biden's is also disputed. Jesse Lee, a former economic spokesperson for the Biden administration, pointed out that the spike in oil prices under Biden was due to Putin's invasion of Ukraine, whereas Trump's own war with Iran contributed to higher oil prices.
Experts and commentators have been quick to mock Trump's claims, calling him 'delusional' and accusing him of spreading misinformation. One person pointed out that saying 'oil is cheaper' while gas prices are rising is like bragging that wheat is cheaper while bread costs more.
