Trump-Xi Meeting Set to Address Tensions Over Trade, Security, AI
President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet at the White House on September 24, amidst strained relations over tariffs, technology restrictions, and security issues.
The meeting comes as the U.S.-China relationship remains complicated, with tensions running high on multiple fronts. The war with Iran has added another geopolitical complication, and Washington wants Beijing to use its economic leverage to pressure Tehran.
China purchases approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports, according to the U.S. Treasury Department, which notes that independent Chinese refineries account for most of those imports.
The meeting will also address Taiwan, with China considering it part of its territory and pressing Washington to take a harder line against what Beijing describes as support for Taiwanese independence.
Artificial intelligence is another major area of competition between the two nations, with both sides disagreeing over issues like advanced semiconductor access, technology transfers, and regulation.
