Trump's economic and military pressure squeezes Iran on multiple fronts

Iran is facing mounting economic and military pressure as US President Donald Trump intensifies his strategy against Tehran. The US economic squeeze is taking a visible toll inside Iran, where oil exports have plummeted, the rial has lost significant value, and a cost-of-living crisis is worsening. Iran's national security adviser, Mohsen Rezaei, acknowledged the severity of the situation, describing it as one of the most difficult periods in the country's history.

The economic strain is evident in daily life, with government and private-sector employees, including nurses and teachers, reporting that their salaries are no longer sufficient to cover living expenses. Retired government employees have also protested over unpaid pensions. The US naval blockade has severely restricted Iran's ability to export oil, its primary source of foreign revenue. In August, Iran managed to export only about 220,000 to 255,000 barrels per day of crude and condensate, a sharp decline from roughly two million barrels per day in March.

Adding to the challenges, Iran's Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad resigned, leaving National Iranian Oil Company chief Hamid Bovard to take over temporarily. While Iran claims Paknejad's departure was for personal reasons, his exit underscores the growing difficulties Tehran faces in managing its oil industry under US sanctions and the naval blockade. Bovard now leads an industry struggling with sanctions and a blockade that hinders access to major customers.

Simultaneously, the US is increasing military pressure by deploying additional troops and naval forces to the Middle East. This dual approach aims to constrain Iran's revenue streams while bolstering military options, as diplomatic efforts with Tehran remain stalled. While there is clear evidence of economic pain, including plummeting oil exports and a weakened currency, it remains uncertain whether this pressure will force Iran to change course.
