Trump's Iran Decision Sends European Gas Prices Plummeting
European natural gas prices plummeted by more than 4% to around €56 per MWh on August 1, following President Donald Trump's decision to call off a planned attack on Iran. This move provided some relief after days of escalating tensions that had driven energy prices sharply higher.
The conflict had heightened concerns over LNG supplies from the Gulf and Europe's ability to replenish gas inventories ahead of winter. As a result, European gas facilities ended last month about 55% full, well below both the five-year average and the level recorded at the same time last year.
Trump stated that negotiations between the parties are set to begin on Monday, providing some optimism for a potential deal. The announcement marked a shift in the escalating tensions between the US and Iran, which had driven energy prices sharply higher in July.
