Trump's Iran Halt Sends UK Gas Prices Plunging

UK natural gas prices plummeted by over 4% on August's first trading day to around 138 pence per therm, marking the lowest level in over two weeks. This significant drop comes after US President Donald Trump called off a planned weekend attack on Iran, stating that Tehran and other Middle Eastern nations had assured him they were working towards a deal.

Trump announced that negotiations between the parties are set to begin on Monday, providing some relief after days of escalating tensions that drove energy prices sharply higher. The renewed fighting in the region had heightened concerns over LNG supplies from the Persian Gulf and Europe's ability to replenish gas inventories ahead of winter.

In July, UK natural gas prices soared by more than 38% as the situation escalated, with European gas facilities ending last month about 55% full. This is well below both the five-year average and the level recorded at the same time last year, leaving storage levels behind the pace needed to meet pre-winter targets before the heating season begins in November.
