Turkey Offers Military Support to Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Attacks
Turkey has offered to meet Saudi Arabia's military needs amid continued Houthi attacks under a three-way defence agreement with Pakistan and Riyadh, dubbed the 'Makkah Defence Alliance'. The pact stipulates that an armed attack on any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack on all of them.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara was prepared to address any military requirements Saudi Arabia may have amid continued Houthi attacks. He noted that there were 'very serious attacks' on Saudi Arabia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, adding that the alliance agreement in their pact showed 'serious solidarity' on this point.
The Houthis, who control the most populous parts of Yemen, have been launching attacks on Saudi Arabia since declaring a naval blockade against Riyadh in July. The attacks have targeted Saudi cities, energy infrastructure, and shipping, threatening global oil supplies and the main alternative Red Sea route for Gulf exports while traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted.
