Turkey Unveils First Domestically Built LNG-Powered Container Ship Kaşif Kalkavan

Turkey has taken a major step in its maritime industry with the launch of its first domestically built liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ship, Kaşif Kalkavan. The vessel, which is also the largest container ship built in Turkey to date, has a capacity of 4,400 TEU and features a multi-fuel propulsion system capable of using five different fuels.

The ship's selective catalytic reduction system and scrubber system ensure control of nitrogen oxide and sulfur emissions. Operated by family-owned company Turkon Line, Kaşif Kalkavan is the first of two vessel series commissioned by the owner. Both newbuilds were constructed by Turkey's Sedef Shipyard with domestic Turkish design and built entirely with Turkish capital.

Turon Line operates routes to the United States, Northern Europe, and India, and its fleet includes seven container ships built between 1996 and 2012. The launch of Kaşif Kalkavan marks a significant milestone for Turkey's shipbuilding industry, showcasing its capabilities in designing and constructing large vessels.
