U.S.-Iran Mediation Continues Amid Public Rejection
Despite U.S. President Donald Trump's public rejection of Iran's latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, mediators are still working behind the scenes to broker a deal between the two nations.
The indirect talks, which were expected to resume on Monday, aim to end the fighting and allow safe shipping on one of the world's most crucial waterways, which has caused global economic damage and badly battered Iran.
According to regional officials and a senior U.S. official who spoke to The Associated Press, Trump remains open to pursuing a non-military resolution to the conflict if one can be achieved.
The latest proposal from Tehran would reopen the strait in a week if the U.S. agreed to lift its blockade of Iranian ports, release frozen Iranian assets, and waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales, among other conditions.
