UAE Returns 4,000 Tons of Iranian Fresh Produce Amid Trade Disputes
The Iranian agricultural export sector is facing one of its most severe crises in recent years due to a drastic turn of events. Over 200 refrigerated containers carrying exported fruit, fresh vegetables, and produce have been returned by the UAE government.
The shipments, worth nearly $3 million, total 4,000 tons and are currently stranded in the Persian Gulf, near Abu Musa Island. The return of these containers has caused significant losses for exporters, who typically operate on bank credit and advance-sale contracts.
The head of National Union of Agricultural Products, Reza Nourani, stated that every hour of delay turns part of the producers' investment into perishable goods, emphasizing the need for immediate action. He attributed the issue to the political climate governing relations between Iran and the UAE, which has led to an indefinite suspension of all trade and financial transactions.
The return of these shipments is a significant blow to non-oil exports, particularly agricultural products, at a time when the country's economic growth in the spring of 2026 has been reported at unprecedented negative figures. The situation poses a serious risk to exporters and highlights the management problems within Iran's agricultural sector.
