UK Energy Bills Could Soar by up to 30% in January Amid Gas Price Spikes
UK household energy bills could rise significantly in January as natural gas prices surge due to the ongoing Middle East crisis, according to forecasts from France's EDF and Bloomberg Economics.
EDF projects a 30% increase in energy bills for the first quarter of 2027, while Bloomberg Economics predicts a 25% spike. This would see typical household bills jump to £2,165 ($2,897) per year, up from £1,723 ($2,306) in October-December 2026.
The UK's energy regulator Ofgem has already raised the energy price cap by 4% for October through December 2026, but further adjustments could lead to a sharp spike in bills this winter. The Energy Price Cap limits what suppliers can charge domestic consumers per kilowatt hour of energy used.
