UK Energy Bills Set to Soar as Price Cap Jumps 16%

The UK is bracing for a massive increase in energy bills as the government's price cap on household gas and electricity prices is set to jump by 16% in January, adding £276 to the average annual dual-fuel bill. The new forecast from Cornwall Insight predicts that typical households will face bills of almost £2,000 per year from January.

Craig Lowrey, a principal consultant at Cornwall Insight, warned that these prices will hit households hard, especially during the cold winter months when bank balances are still recovering from Christmas expenses.

The price cap increase is attributed to the recent rise in gas market prices to three-year highs. The UK's energy regulator, Ofgem, sets the government's price cap based on wholesale prices between August and November, so an increase is 'all but certain' given the rises so far this month.

Some experts have called for targeted support from the government to help struggling households, with Simon Francis, coordinator at the Energy Fuel Poverty Coalition, warning that millions will spend the winter in cold, damp homes without adequate heating, leading to avoidable illnesses and even deaths.
