UK Energy Bills Set to Soar by £9.8 Billion Due to US-Iran Conflict

The ongoing US-Iran conflict has led to a significant increase in wholesale oil and gas prices, which is expected to result in an estimated £9.8 billion added cost for UK energy and road transport costs. This includes over £5 billion in higher gas and electricity costs that will be reflected in bills next year, alongside around £4.7 billion in additional road fuel costs already being paid by motorists.

According to the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), for every week the conflict continues, UK gas and electricity users are likely to face a further £190 million in excess costs on energy bills, with the full effects being felt next year as wholesale gas prices feed through into contracted energy rates. The same analysis shows that road fuel costs will continue to rise by around £183 million per week.

Commenting on the analysis, Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at ECIU, stated: 'Yet again, events thousands of miles away are having a direct impact on the cost of living in the UK because of slow progress on electrification and ongoing dependence on oil and gas priced by international markets.'
