UK Sanctions Five LNG Carriers in Bid to Constrain Russia's Arctic Shipping
The UK has imposed sanctions on five liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers as part of its efforts to restrict Russia's maritime trade. The vessels, Chaivo, Portovyy, Aleksey Kosygin, Konstantin Posyet, and Pyotr Stolypin, are subject to UK shipping and trade sanctions that prohibit their operation and chartering in UK ports.
The three newest vessels, Aleksey Kosygin, Konstantin Posyet, and Pyotr Stolypin, were built for Russia's Arctic LNG program and are designed to navigate heavy Arctic ice without an escort. The UK has effectively constrained Russia's future Arctic LNG shipping capacity by sanctioning the vessel Pyotr Stolypin before it enters commercial service.
The sanctions come as Britain prepares to further restrict Russian LNG trade, with existing licensing arrangements for maritime transportation of Russian LNG being extended on a targeted and time-limited basis. The UK government has said that its ban on UK maritime and insurance services connected with Russian LNG exports will take effect from January 1, 2027.
