Ukraine Attacks Stymie Russia's Grain Exports, Alternate Routes Sought
Russia's grain terminal capacity in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov has taken significant damage from Ukrainian attacks, potentially stalling up to 20% of its exports. According to a Reuters analysis, three major terminals have been severely damaged, including NKHP in Novorossiysk, which could take six months to repair. The terminal has an annual capacity of 7.1 million metric tons and is one of Russia's largest grain facilities.
The damage at the other two Novorossiysk terminals, KSK and NZT, was minor, but NKHP's conveyor gallery collapsed in the August 12 attack, sending staff home for six months. The company has stated that repairs could take up to four months, but it's unclear how long the shutdown will last.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is leading an international effort with grain-importing countries to restore Black Sea grain trade, which has been stalled by attacks on ports and vessels in recent months. Russian officials have acknowledged diplomatic contacts but said they are finding alternate export routes in the meantime.
