Ukraine Grain Exports Halted as Black Sea Blockade Takes Hold
The blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea ports by Russian military forces is expected to have a negative impact on the country's grain exports, according to Taras Vysotsky, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food. The prolonged downtime at the ports of Greater Odessa (Odessa, Izmail, and Yuzhny) will reduce Ukrainian farmers' ability to export grain crops, with only half of intended exports possible even if events in the region improve.
Vysotsky stated that alternative routes could provide about 40 percent of the volumes that passed through the aforementioned ports before the crisis. However, he emphasized that exporting large volumes of grain via these routes is unlikely.
The blockade's impact extends beyond grain exports, with other important Ukrainian goods such as metals, ore, food, engineering products, and construction materials also affected. Vladimir Shchelkunov, head of the National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Ukraine), warned that a prolonged blockade could put a tenth of the republic's economy at risk.
