Ukraine Grain Market Faces Logistics Pressure Amid Port Congestion
Ukraine's grain market is facing increased logistics pressure due to constrained operations at the Greater Odesa ports. As a result, shipments are being redirected through alternative routes, including the Danube and western borders.
The introduction of higher railway tariffs in August 2026 has further complicated export economics. UkrAgroConsult estimates that wheat delivery costs may reach $60-$70 per metric ton, potentially reducing or eliminating producer margins under current grain prices.
As a result, farmers are increasingly postponing sales and storing newly harvested grain to avoid immediate logistics discounts. However, this strategy raises storage costs and exposes farmers to additional risks related to financing, timing, and quality loss.
