Ukraine Seeks Baltic Ports as Black Sea Trade Halted
Ukraine is exploring alternative routes for grain exports due to disruptions in Black Sea trade caused by the ongoing war. The country's agriculture ministry announced plans to utilize Baltic Sea ports, which could handle up to 20 million tons of grain.
This move comes as Russia has also started repurposing its own Baltic and Arctic ports to export grain, following Ukrainian drone attacks that disrupted shipments through the Black Sea.
Ukraine's current Danube river port exports have increased logistics costs by about $50 per metric ton, making their grain uncompetitive. The Baltic route would add an additional $100 per ton to expenses, requiring up to $2 billion in international support from Ukraine.
