Ukrainian Agricultural Exports Plummet Amid War Logistics Nightmare

Ukraine's agricultural exports have taken a hit due to the ongoing war. According to Maksym Hopka, an analyst from the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, the country's agricultural exports fell by around a quarter in July and could halve in August to 1.4-1.5 million tons.

The deep-sea ports in Odesa region are critical for Ukraine's agricultural sector, as more than 90% of Ukrainian exports had been shipped through them until recently. However, vessels are refusing to enter the ports due to war risks, forcing Ukraine to redirect its logistics.

Developing alternative routes is complicated by factors such as record-low water levels on the Danube, which have limited vessel capacity to 20-30%. Additionally, alternative logistics add an average of $50-58 per ton to producers' costs.

Limited export capacity combined with an active harvest campaign has resulted in domestic supply exceeding demand, causing prices to fall sharply. Food-grade wheat is priced at $130-140 per ton, 30-35% below global levels.
