Uniper Locks in Long-Term LNG Deal with BC's Ksi Lisims Project
German utility Uniper has signed a long-term deal to purchase liquefied natural gas from British Columbia's Ksi Lisims project. The deal, worth two million tonnes per year for up to 20 years, marks the first major long-term LNG supply agreement between Canada and Germany.
The first deliveries are expected in 2032. Uniper will buy the LNG from the $30-billion project, which would be Canada's second-largest LNG facility. The deal is seen as a boost for both Canada and Germany, with Uniper CEO Michael Lewis saying that 'Canada helps diversify Europe’s energy supply and strengthens resilience against future disruptions.'
However, not everyone is pleased with the deal. Richard Brooks, climate finance director with Stand.earth, called it 'a major step backwards for climate action' for both Germany and Canada.
