US-China LNG Tariff Talks Could Unlock Broader Trade Deal

The US and China are discussing reducing Beijing's tariff on US liquefied natural gas as part of a broader package that could include energy and agricultural agreements. This comes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Washington on September 24, where the two governments will be working through earlier agricultural commitments.

According to Reuters, the talks matter beyond the energy sector because Washington and Beijing are considering reciprocal tariff relief on roughly $30 billion in goods, potentially giving US agriculture another path into negotiations. The LNG component could be combined with a wider framework under which both countries would reduce tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of goods.

The significance lies in the architecture of the negotiations, where energy and farm products are increasingly being discussed as interconnected bargaining chips in the US-China trade relationship. Agriculture is expected to feature prominently around the Trump-Xi summit, with commodity purchases and tariff concessions back on the agenda at a time when farmers are looking for clearer evidence of sustained Chinese demand.
