US Data Centers Set for Record-Breaking Natural Gas Consumption
Data centers in the US are expected to consume more natural gas than most countries within a decade. According to BloombergNEF, gas consumption for data center electricity production will grow by 15 billion cubic feet per day between 2025 and 2035.
This growth is driven by the abundance and low cost of producing natural gas in the US, combined with the ability of gas power plants to quickly ramp up and down as needed by 24/7 data centers. The report states that the fuel will supply 69% of the power needed by new grid-connected facilities.
The soaring demand for natural gas from AI data centers and LNG export plants poses a complex challenge for domestic gas producers, which are projected to raise gas output by 35 billion cubic feet per day between 2025 and 2035 but will need to produce an additional 11 billion cubic feet per day to meet forecasted demand.
