US Deploys Patriot Missiles to Protect Saudi, Qatari Energy Assets
The United States has deployed Patriot missiles to protect Saudi and Qatari oil and gas facilities from potential Iranian attacks. According to an Axios report, two American officials and a regional source confirmed that the strategic deployments were in response to concerns raised by Saudi and Qatari leaders that Tehran could target their energy assets if Washington resumes major offensive operations against Iran.
The Patriot units were positioned in Saudi Arabia to protect a major petroleum installation, while another was sent to Qatar to safeguard a primary natural gas facility. This move highlights the vulnerabilities facing Gulf energy networks should the U.S.-Iran conflict escalate further.
The deployments coincide with mounting strain on American air defence stockpiles. Data from an assessment by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies indicated that US Patriot interceptor reserves had dropped below 1,000 units following heavy expenditure throughout the conflict with Iran.
