US Energy Secretary Threatens to Leave International Energy Agency Over Climate Focus

The US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has threatened to leave the International Energy Agency (IEA) if it does not align its focus on climate issues. Wright stated that the US 'will either reform the IEA or we will leave the IEA.' The IEA, based in Paris, provides research and data to industrialized governments for over half a century to guide policy around energy security, supply, and investment.

The US is one of the largest contributors to the IEA, providing about a quarter of its funding. Wright emphasized his preference for reforming the agency rather than leaving it. He wants the IEA to focus on its core mission and deliver results 'well and thoughtfully.'

The IEA has expanded its scope in recent years to include clean energy, helping member governments meet their climate goals under the Paris Agreement. However, some have criticized this shift, calling for the agency to prioritize oil, gas, and coal.
