US Expands Iran Sanctions, Threatens Chinese Entities Involved in Trade

China has vowed to safeguard its interests after the US expanded its sanctions on Iran, which includes threatening Chinese entities involved in trade with Tehran.

The move comes nearly six months into the US-Israel war on Iran, and China remains a key customer for Iranian oil. Beijing has advocated for a ceasefire, insisting that US sanctions will not resolve the conflict.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said 'no one is above the reach of US sanctions,' but Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, believes threats to sanction Chinese entities are unlikely due to diplomatic and legal obstacles.
