US Hammers Home Energy Dominance Amid Global Disruptions

The US government emphasized its energy dominance at the G-20 energy ministers meeting in Houston on September 15. The gathering's slogan, 'Unleash the full potential of American energy,' was repeated by US officials to highlight their focus on domestic production. Interior Secretary Doug Bergum stated that President Donald Trump's policies are a reversal of his predecessor's approach to climate change.

The meeting saw the announcement of reduced limits on pollution from gas- and coal-fired power plants, which sparked outcry from environmentalists. The EPA chief, Lee Zeldin, accused former president Joe Biden of participating in 'climate alarmism' by promoting renewable energies. The move aims to meet growing demand for electricity driven by the artificial intelligence industry.

US officials also highlighted the impact of the conflict in the Middle East on global energy markets. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has sent oil prices soaring, and advances made by pro-Iranian Houthis to control the Bab el-Mandeb Strait have begun to affect Saudi oil exports.

The US is banking on domestic production and Venezuela's massive oil reserves to meet growing demand. An agreement this summer allows the US to control one-fifth of Venezuela's oil reserves, but ramping up production will take time due to the country's under-invested infrastructure.
