US Hog Inventory Drops 2% Amid Rising Feed Costs
The US hog inventory has decreased by 2% compared to last year, reaching 74.3 million hogs and pigs on September 1st, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.
This marks a significant drop from the same period in 2025, but an increase of 2% from June 1st this year. The total inventory consists of 68.4 million market hogs and 5.87 million breeding animals.
Iowa remains the leading producer of hogs, accounting for roughly one-third of the US inventory with 24.7 million head. Feed costs continue to be a major concern for pork producers, directly impacting their profitability and connecting them to corn prices and soybean meal costs.
