US Open to Iran Deal, But Strangling Economy Instead
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said that Washington remains open to diplomacy with Iran. He stated this on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in an interview with CBS's Face the Nation.
In his comments, Wright emphasized President Donald Trump's preference for a negotiated settlement over military action unless it is 'absolutely necessary.' However, he also noted that the US military's main role in the region is to stop Iranian oil and energy exports, which they are achieving by 'strangling their economy' to bring about either a change in policy from the existing regime or a new government.
Tehran's current strategy, according to Wright, is 'slowly failing.' He stated that Washington remains open for a deal but would only accept a negotiated agreement if it addresses the concerns of US policymakers. The Energy Secretary's comments come as tensions between the two countries continue to rise.
