US Slams Iran with New Sanctions, Targets Military Officials and Cyber Operators
The US Department of State announced new sanctions against Iran on Tuesday, targeting military officials, procurement networks, cyber operators, and energy traders. The sanctions aim to disrupt Iran's military, procurement, cyber, and oil trade operations.
The state department reported that the sanctions target Iranian military officials responsible for procuring weapons, directing attacks against US forces and partners, and gathering intelligence to target US troops. Procurement networks supporting Iran's military and missile programs are also targeted.
Cyber operators accused of widespread breaches into US critical infrastructure are also included in the sanctions. The state department noted that the cyber measures were executed in close coordination with the FBI, following indictments unsealed the previous week against eight Iranian nationals for attacks on US energy firms, defense contractors, healthcare facilities, and government offices.
The US offered a reward of up to $10 million for information regarding five individuals involved in malicious state-sponsored cyber operations against critical US infrastructure. The statement concluded with Washington affirming its commitment to disrupting Iran's military, procurement, cyber, and oil trade operations, while calling on the international community to help hold those involved accountable.
