US Slams Iran with 'Toughest Sanctions in History', Oil Prices Surge
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Thursday that the US will impose 'the toughest sanctions in history' on Iran.
The economic pressure is expected to prevent a kinetic restart on the battlefield, according to Bessent.
In a post on Twitter, President Donald Trump described the move as the 'most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,' which includes 'economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.'
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by calling the US strategy 'doubling down on failed policies' that will only bring further defeat.
The Brent crude oil price surged sharply after the announcement, closing at $93.78 per barrel.
