US Stock Market Sees Best Day in Six Weeks Amid Oil Price Drop
The US stock market experienced its best day in six weeks on Thursday, following a decline in oil prices and easing pressure from the bond market. The S&P 500 rose 1.1%, marking only its second gain in nine days, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 316 points, or 0.6%. The Nasdaq composite climbed 1.7%.
The drop in Brent crude oil prices to $104.82, down from nearly $110 earlier in the week, helped lower yields in the bond market and removed some pressure on stocks. This came after the Federal Reserve raised the short-term interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point, signaling potential future hikes to combat high inflation.
Despite higher interest rates potentially slowing the economy, Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh cited a strengthening economy as one reason for the move. He also mentioned geopolitics and the threat of increasing prices filtering out and pushing up inflation elsewhere.
