US Targets Iranian Oil Tankers as Retaliation for IRGC Missile Attack
US forces struck three Iranian oil tankers on September 5 after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired ballistic missiles at two US Navy ships, according to a statement from the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
The targeted vessels included one near Kharg Island, home to Iran's principal oil export terminal.
CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper warned that if Iran attacks US ships, 'we will impose an even higher economic cost, taking out three of yours.'
No American personnel were harmed in the Iranian attack, CENTCOM said. The exchange marked the latest escalation in a conflict that began after the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February.
