US Unveils Broadened Sanctions Against Iran Amid Economic Pressure
The US is set to broaden secondary sanctions against Iran as part of its efforts to isolate Tehran economically. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will outline measures at 1 p.m. (1700 GMT) on Monday to increase the scope of potential sanctions on entities and countries that maintain economic ties with Iran.
The move aims to put pressure on Iran to end attacks on ships in the Gulf and Red Sea, which Tehran launched after US and Israeli air strikes against it in February. However, experts warn that Washington is wary of Chinese retaliation for any sanctions on its banks ahead of expected talks next month between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Bessent may sharpen enforcement against oil shippers, purchasers, and currency exchangers who help Iran pay for its imports. He could also target aviation. The US has already warned countries to cut ties with Iran or risk their businesses being cut off from the dollar-based financial system.
