USDA Corn Shock Wipes Out Value as Grain Markets Tumble
The USDA's Grain Stocks report on September 30, 2026, sent shockwaves through U.S. grain markets when it revealed a massive 2.095 billion bushels of corn in storage as of September 1.
This was a staggering 35% increase from the same time last year and significantly higher than market expectations, which had pegged the number at around 1.918 billion bushels.
Corn futures immediately plummeted, with December prices falling by 21.25 cents to $5.0075 per bushel, a decline of around 3.5% to 4% for most contracts.
This sudden and unexpected surge in corn inventories has major implications for U.S. producers, who are now facing increased competition for demand as newly harvested bushels enter the supply chain.
