USDA Report Corn and Soybean Harvests Ahead of Schedule
The USDA's latest crop progress report, released on October 5, 2026, reveals that the 2026 corn and soybean harvests are ahead of the multi-year average pace. The report highlights significant advancements in several key crops, including cotton, sorghum, peanuts, rice, sugarbeets, and sunflowers, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
For corn, 83% of the crop was mature across 18 major planting states as of October 4, 2026, up from 72% the previous week and above the five-year average of 70%. Harvest progress reached 23%, compared to 18% the prior week and a five-year average of 15%. Corn condition ratings showed 44% of the crop in good condition and 13% excellent, with minimal very poor ratings at 6%.
Soybean harvests also surged ahead, with 85% of the crop having dropped leaves by October 4, 2026, compared to 75% a week earlier. Harvest completion stood at 25%, surpassing the five-year average of 23%. Soybean condition was rated 48% good and 15% excellent, with very poor ratings at 4%. The report noted that federal funding lapses in late 2025 led to the cancellation of weekly crop progress reports, affecting prior-year comparisons.
Other crops such as cotton, sorghum, and peanuts showed varied progress. Cotton bolls opened in 74% of plants, up from 67% the previous week, with harvest at 23%. Sorghum coloring reached 72%, while harvest was at 7%. Peanut harvests were 22% complete, exceeding the five-year average. Winter wheat planting progressed to 46%, and pasture conditions varied across states.
