Utah Trades for Goaltender Sebastian Cossa in Draft Night Deal

Sebastian Cossa, a goaltender from Alberta, Canada, has made a significant move in his hockey career. He was recently traded by the Detroit Red Wings to the Utah Mammoth on the first night of the Draft. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, and raised in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Cossa comes from a family with an older brother, Nicholas. Last summer, he married his wife Emerson.

Cossa's path to the pros began with junior hockey in Alberta, starting with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons' U15 AA team and later joining the Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL) for three seasons. During his time with the Oil Kings, Cossa had impressive stats, including a 2.12 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage over 98 games.

After being drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 2021, Cossa turned pro and started his career within the Red Wings organization. He played for the Toledo Walleye (ECHL) and Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL), eventually making his NHL debut on December 9, 2024, with a win.

Cossa has also gained international experience, winning gold at the 2022 IIHL World Junior Championship and playing in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. As he looks to take the next step with Utah, Cossa is expected to make the jump to the NHL as Karel Vejmelka's backup.
