Vaca Muerta Boom Fuels Argentina's Economic Growth
Argentina's economy is experiencing a boom driven by the Vaca Muerta shale formation in northern Patagonia. The country's oil production hit a record high of 902,920 barrels per day in July 2026, with shale oil making up 72% of total petroleum output.
The Vaca Muerta formation is responsible for Argentina's growing oil and gas complex, with natural gas production increasing by 21% over the past five years. Shale oil production rose by 1.2% month-over-month and 26% year-over-year to an all-time high of 648,347 barrels per day in July 2026.
Global energy supermajors, including Chevron, Shell, and BP, are investing heavily in the Vaca Muerta formation. Chevron plans to invest $13.8 billion to develop its El Trapial acreage, while state-controlled YPF has applied for incentives to develop a $51 billion integrated liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.
