VNG AG Eyes Long-Term Gas Deals with Azerbaijan
German energy company VNG AG is exploring options to boost its gas imports from Azerbaijan and transition to long-term supply agreements. Oliver Hill, Senior Vice President and Head of Corporate Development at VNG, emphasized the company's interest in expanding its partnership with SOCAR beyond natural gas, including areas like biomethane, renewable energy, hydrogen, and decarbonized fuels.
Hill highlighted the importance of meeting the EU's upcoming methane emissions requirements, noting that compliance is crucial for future cooperation. Currently, VNG imports 2.5 TWh of gas annually from Azerbaijan, with plans to significantly increase this volume. The company is also ready to extend its current three-year contract into a long-term agreement spanning 15 to 20 years, ensuring stable gas supplies to Germany and fostering investment opportunities in Azerbaijan.
VNG's focus on hydrogen and other decarbonized fuels aligns with its expertise in moving molecules rather than electricity. Hill reiterated the company's commitment to long-term contracts, which would not only secure gas supplies but also create a framework for deeper collaboration with SOCAR in emerging energy sectors.
