VNG Says Germany's Gas Supply Is Covered Despite Record-Low Storage Levels

Despite record-low levels of natural gas in storage sites, Germany's gas supply is not threatened thanks to diversified import capabilities. VNG, one of Germany's largest gas importers, says it has set up its portfolio to meet delivery obligations even in a cold winter.

VNG CEO Ulf Heitmueller credits the company's robust system and increased access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) for its ability to meet customer needs. VNG imports gas from Norway and has recently signed deals with Azerbaijan and Algeria, diversifying its suppliers after Russian pipeline gas stopped flowing due to the invasion of Ukraine.

The Leipzig-based importer signed a new agreement with Algeria's state energy firm Sonatrach in July to receive additional volumes of gas starting in 2027. As of September 27, EU gas storage sites were only 70% full, and Germany's vast storage is just about 57% full, prompting concerns about supply security.
