WA Grains Industry Aims for Record Crop Production
The Western Australian grains industry is experiencing significant growth due to innovations in farming practices and technology. According to Ross Kingwell, an economic analysis team member at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the state's crop area and grain yields are increasing every year.
'We have been producing crops of 25 million tonnes instead of 10 million tonnes,' Mr Kingwell said. 'The trajectory is still going upwards.'
The industry is expecting a record 30 million tonne crop, which could feed 50 million people. Most of the grain produced in WA is exported to Asia, with Southeast Asia being a major market for wheat.
Canola has been a game-changer for WA croppers, providing a highly profitable alternative to add to their rotation and helping with weed control at the same time.
