Wheat Prices Surge Amid Black Sea Concerns and Speculative Buying
Global wheat prices have surged 5.2% in the last week of August, with UK November 26 futures markets closing at £215.75/t.
This trend has been ongoing for several weeks, driven by a range of factors impacting global grain markets.
The Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) attributes the price rise to concerns about the Black Sea region, where Russia's potential missile strikes against Ukraine have dimmed hopes for increased grain exports from the area.
Speculative buying has also contributed to the price increase, with nearby Chicago wheat futures reaching its highest price since February 2023 and December-26 Paris wheat futures gaining 5.4% over the same period.
