Windshield Washer Fluid Containers Won't Get Refundable Fee Back

Albertans paying an environmental fee on windshield washer fluid containers won't be able to get it back when recycling. According to the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA), the 48-cent fee is not refundable, unlike deposits on beverage containers.

The 12 cents per litre of container capacity fee for four-litre windshield washer fluid containers took effect this month as part of a shift into the used oil recycling program. ARMA CEO Ed Gugenheimer said these containers 'are not accepted through Alberta's beverage container recycling system and should not be taken to bottle depots.'

Instead, residents are directed to participating Used Oil Materials collection sites that accept containers. The authority is working with collection sites to establish permanent collection infrastructure.
