WTI Oil Price Drops Amid Escalating Tensions with Russia
Crude oil prices are declining despite rising tensions in Eastern Europe, where conflicts between Russia and Ukraine have escalated. The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil price has dropped to around $82.70 per barrel during Asian hours on Friday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent statements indicate that negotiations with Ukraine have stalled, prompting Russia to prepare for further hostilities. Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and ports continue to damage critical energy infrastructure, threatening to limit Russia's capacity to export oil and refined products.
However, market anxiety has been tempered by reports of improved supply prospects through the Strait of Hormuz, driven by a new revenue-sharing agreement between Iran's military and Oman. Analysts at MUFG suggest that the recent firming in crude may mark 'the start of a renewed bounce in energy prices', but stress that the outlook hinges on how much shipping is actually getting through the Strait.
