$1 Million Crypto Heist: Ex-FBI Agent Charged with Stealing from Foreign Intelligence Target

Share

Former FBI Supervisory Special Agent Patrick Steven Yaroch has been charged with stealing close to $1 million in cryptocurrency from wallets connected to a foreign intelligence target. The allegations, which have not been proven in court, were filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Yaroch, who joined the FBI around 2017 and worked on national security squads in Boston and Washington D.C., allegedly used internal bureau systems to transfer cryptocurrency between 2024 and 2025. He mixed some of the funds with his own assets and moved them through multiple wallets and platforms, including Suilend and Kraken.

According to court records, Yaroch contacted a Justice Department employee on July 28 and confessed to making 'very poor decisions related to cryptocurrency wallets.' He was placed on administrative leave, fired from the FBI, and arrested on July 31. Investigators found electronic devices, wallet recovery phrases, and a Trezor hardware wallet during a search of his Virginia residence.

With Yaroch's cooperation, authorities transferred around $925,426 into government-controlled wallets. He is now facing charges for interstate transportation and receipt of stolen property, each carrying up to 10 years in prison.
