$240 Million Bitcoin Heist Exposed: Young Scammers' Extravagant Spending Spree
A group of young men stole over $240 million worth of Bitcoin in one of the largest cryptocurrency heists in US history. The theft occurred in August 2024, and the perpetrators used social engineering tactics to deceive a wealthy investor into handing over his crypto assets.
The scammers claimed to be representatives from Google and Gemini exchange, convincing the victim to give them access to his Google Drive and security codes. They then funneled over 4,100 Bitcoin, worth more than $240 million at the time, into their own accounts.
Malone Lam, 22, was identified as the ringleader of the group. He spent lavishly on sports cars, private jets, and luxury real estate, including a mansion in Miami that he rented for over $100,000 per month. His co-conspirators also flaunted their ill-gotten gains, with Veer Chetal buying a Lamborghini for his parents and hiding a duffel bag filled with $500,000 in cash in their laundry machine.
The FBI arrested several members of the group, including Lam and Serrano. Chetal agreed to cooperate with investigators after they found over $37 million in stolen crypto at his apartment in New Jersey.
