$245M Crypto Heist Mastermind Pleads Guilty to RICO Conspiracy

A young Singaporean man has pleaded guilty to participating in a massive cryptocurrency heist. Malone Lam, 22, admitted to taking part in a RICO conspiracy tied to the theft and laundering of over $245 million worth of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

The scheme centered around an August 2024 theft of more than 4,100 Bitcoin from a Washington-area victim. The attackers didn't exploit any protocol vulnerabilities but instead used social engineering tactics to trick the victim into granting access to their Google Drive account and revealing security codes.

Lam is one of 18 defendants charged in the case and the 11th to plead guilty. Prosecutors describe him as an organizer for a network of young men who ran a string of cryptocurrency scams starting in 2023.

The group laundered the stolen funds, converting them into cash that was used to fund a lavish lifestyle. Lam spent over $2 million on a watch and rented mansions in Miami, while also renting cars including Porsches, Lamborghinis, and Ferraris. He reportedly spent $569,000 at a single night out at an LA nightclub.

Lam's arrest was facilitated by an off-duty law enforcement officer who tipped him off that agents were en route, but the tip did not prevent his eventual capture. In a recorded jailhouse call cited in the indictment, Lam told associates that getting caught had exceeded even their own worst-case scenarios.
