$40 Trillion Debt Load Sparks Conflicting Views on Bitcoin

The United States' national debt has surpassed $40 trillion, a milestone that some crypto investors see as an opportunity. However, recent market data suggests that this may not be the case.

In August, Bitcoin rallied around 23% in response to the news of the rising national debt, reaching prices above $70,000. This surge was largely driven by liquidity and real yields, rather than the debt milestone itself.

Proponents of the 'debasement trade' argue that as governments allow inflation to rise, assets like gold, bonds, real estate, and Bitcoin will outperform. They point to the increased money in circulation as a result of more debt, which they believe will lead to a weakening dollar and higher values for these assets.

However, closer examination reveals a different story. The correlation between Bitcoin and gold has been overstated, with the two assets showing only a weak-to-moderate statistical relationship. Furthermore, Bitcoin's behavior during times of crisis suggests it is more closely tied to risk assets like the Nasdaq Composite rather than safe-havens.

In fact, during previous financial downturns, such as the COVID-19 crash and the 2022 inflation crunch, Bitcoin has actually sold off more sharply than stocks. This undermines the idea that Bitcoin serves as a reliable hedge against market volatility.
