a16z-Backed Linera Shuts Down Due to Funding Shortfall
The four-year development effort of Layer 1 project Linera has come to an end after it failed to secure enough funding to reach mainnet. Despite having raised $12 million from investors including a16z Crypto and Borderless Capital, the project was unable to continue operating due to a lack of financing. The team had sought emergency funding after its LNRA community sale closed below the 1.5 million USDC minimum required to proceed.
Linaea's founder Mathieu Baudet announced the shutdown in the official Discord on September 18, stating that the project would cease operations immediately. The community sale attracted 848,271 USDC from 617 participants, but fell short of the minimum threshold. As a result, all committed funds were refunded.
The team's failure to secure funding has left Linera in an unusual position, with its microchain architecture progressing through years of development without reaching mainnet. The project's shutdown means that its technical design will not receive the mainnet test needed to determine whether it can support a sustainable network economy.
