Aave Foundation Proposal Aims to Transfer Brand Control to DAO
Aave Labs recently submitted a proposal to establish a foundation in the Cayman Islands to hold and protect Aave's brand and intellectual property. The proposal, named 'Aave Foundation, First Phase,' sparked an 8% increase in the AAVE token's value. However, the deeper significance lies in the revelation that Aave's brand, trademarks, and core domain names are not currently under the control of the Aave DAO.
The current holder of the AAVE trademark is Quantum Swan OÜ, an Estonian company linked to Aave Labs. This setup, common in the early days of DeFi, has left the DAO funding development work without ownership of the most critical assets. A 2025 proposal demanding full transfer of these assets was met with resistance, leading to the 'Aave Will Win' framework in early 2026, where Aave Labs promised to address brand custody through governance.
The current proposal is limited in scope, focusing only on setting up the foundation and appointing initial independent directors. It does not address the transfer of trademarks, domains, or code intellectual property. The foundation will operate without members or shareholders, allowing it to legally hold assets while being governed by AAVE token holders through voting on key decisions.
This structure aims to resolve the power imbalance between DAOs and private companies holding brand assets. It represents a significant step in DeFi governance, potentially increasing the value of AAVE tokens by expanding their governance scope to include brand and intellectual property decisions.
