Aave Founder Criticizes EU Push for Tighter Stablecoin and DeFi Rules
Aave founder Stani Kulechov has spoken out against European Union proposals to tighten regulations on stablecoin yields and decentralized finance (DeFi) services. Kulechov, whose company operates a major decentralized lending protocol, argued that the proposed changes could extend existing restrictions beyond direct stablecoin payments.
The European Central Bank and European Banking Authority have called for stricter controls on stablecoin remuneration, including prohibiting indirect returns such as crypto lending, borrowing, and staking. Kulechov's criticism also targets additional regulatory requirements around access to DeFi services.
The MiCA review is an opportunity for European authorities to establish a regulatory framework for on-chain financial activity while addressing risks associated with emerging services. However, Kulechov's stance highlights the challenges of defining decentralization and distinguishing between regulated intermediaries and fully decentralized services.
